The UT-ORNL Graduate School of Genome Science and Technology (GST) is a graduate program jointly operated by more than 60 scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. We are looking for students who are talented and motivated to investigate biological problems at and across the interface of experimental and computational technologies. The life sciences are in the midst of a generational transformation. Compared to twenty years ago, investigators have access to dramatically larger datasets. These data are increasingly becoming connected across multiple scales of biological organization, from the molecular to the ecosystem level. This new biology requires a new kind of scientist who is willing to establish a firm and rigorous foundation in the domain life sciences, is trained in quantitative analytical techniques, and is comfortable with adapting the requisite computational tools to derive meaning from such data. The GST program is designed to educate PhD-level scientists who are equipped to tackle the complex world of biology using modern technologies. A Master’s track is also available for some students.

GST welcomes students with a solid undergraduate background in the biological sciences, physical sciences, or computational sciences. A Master’s degree is not required to enter the PhD track. We encourage you to explore the details of our program and hope to hear from you.
