Description of Research
Mentor(s): Ron Wetzel
The presence of polglutamine aggregates is the hallmark of polyglutamine repeat disorders such as Huntington's Disease and Machado-Joseph Disease. It is not clear, however, whether these aggregates are actually responsible for cell death. My research project is to examine if there are different species of aggregates in cells, and if so, which species are responsible for cellular dysfunction and/or death. The model used is an inducible PC-12 cell line that expresses huntingtin with various lengths of polyglutamine repeats. Aggregates will be detected and classified by different methods we have available in the lab.
