Description of Research:

DOE's interest in the bioremediation of organic compounds and heavy metals, carbon sequestration, carbon cycling, nitrogen and other nutrient cycling, renewable energy sources, and microbial communities has lead to their sequencing many microbial genomes. The rate of sequencing has been continuously increasing and has reached the point where manual annotation is no longer routinely feasible. Automated annotation is the only alternative, but presently has many drawbacks. We are currently devising schemes to organize and analyse the huge amounts of information that can be obtained from the large biological databases so that it can be used for automated genome annotation.
